Based in Japan but with US headquarters in New Jersey, Belviq and Belviq XR are manufactured by a company called Eisai, Inc.If you or a loved one took Belviq between 2012 and 2020, feel free to call The Jackman Law Firm for a free consultation to discuss your case. A BRIEF BACKGROUND OF BELVIQ

Belviq were created as diet pills to help men and women who had a body mass index, BMI, that exceeded 30, and who also suffered from conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes.

The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, granted approval for Belviq to be given to adults because there were three clinical trials done on approximately 8,000 people. Belviq has a drug called “lorcaserin.” This drug sparks a part of the brain responsible for serotonin. The idea behind Belviq is that this spark would supposedly help people feel fuller and more satisfied after eating small amounts of food.

Many Americans remember the infamous diet drug called “fen-phen” from the 1990’s. Serotonins 2C is the same supposed hormone that tames people’s appetites, which was when the fen-phen drug. Fen-phen was removed by the FDA after only being on the market for 18 months because of dangers the drug posed to people’s hearts.

While there has been no linkage between heart problems and Belviq, the FDA has found people who used the drug were diagnosed with cancer.

BELVIQ’S CANCER RISKS

After being recalled by the FDA, the FDA is now recommending obese men and women find an alternative to Belviq to treat their obesity given the connection Belviq has to cancer. Per the FDA, one additional cancer diagnosis was found per 470 patients who took Belviq. The most common cancers associated with Bleviq were:

  • Lung cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Colorectal cancer

People who took Belviq were also found to be more likely to be at risk of additional cancers, such as liver cancer and leukemia. In addition to the increased likelihood of getting cancer on Belviq, some people have experienced severe withdrawal symptoms after getting off Belviq, including symptoms of nausea, dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, and headaches.
